Sports Massage
In the course of intense muscular activity - during training, in competition, or in everyday life - the musculature is pressed to the limit. This often results in painful build-up of metabolic wastes in the muscle tissue, strains in connective tissue, inflammation of muscle fibers and tissues, and decreased range of motion in joints. The purpose of Sports Massage is to accelerate the body's natural healing process, to identify and eliminate potential injuries, and to reduce recovery time. For example, massage techniques will cut in half the time (normally 48 to 72 hours) required for fatigued muscle to recuperate. All aspects of this therapy will result in enhanced performance, a quicker return, and reduced pain and stiffness.
Treatments for athletes are generally grouped by their goals as follows:
- Recovery: enhancing physical and mental rebound after strenuous activity
- Remedy: improving a debilitating condition
- Rehabilitation: facilitating healing after a disabling injury
- Maintenance: helping to maintain optimum health and to accelerate recovery
- Event: preparing for or recovering from a specific competitive event.
Sports participants should also keep in mind that recurring injuries or frequent pain may be your body's warning to you that there is a postural problem that needs your attention. Please see our discussion of Postural Assessment and Treatment.
Treatment Duration and Fee
A 1-1/2 hour treatment session carries a fee of $65. Most treatments for specific problems will not require a full session, and appropriate fees can be arranged.
